Fabulous Friday #02

Who has not procrastinated? I don’t think there would be even one person who would say “I have not”. The reason being, it’s very easy to just push something to do later. The human brain most times would want to be in a comfort zone, get away with things that would make life easy, like asking someone else to do something or trying to find a workaround to make a task simple or not sticking to one task at a time or the most interesting one is to make a promise to do something later or tomorrow because something else came up.

Pushing an important task to do it later and focusing on easy and less cumbersome one will always give us false feeling that we are doing a lot many other good things but there would be a late realisation that they are all wrong things or sometime useless.

When this realisation dawns upon us, most of the times, the feeling is that of regret or getting frustrated with ourselves for not that one particular task, but that feeling stays in mind for a short while and we are back to doing the same old postponements of taking an action. In case of simple matters, it would be manageable, but this habit of procrastinating important work has become the root cause of many issues in our lives.

Most of the reasons for procrastination are lack of self- regulation or self-discipline, lack of basic management, inability to prioritise, resistance to get out of the comfort zone, laziness, poor time management and not to forget our mobile phone, it is one of the biggest reasons for us to postpone or even forget important work.

What can be the ways to overcome this problem of procrastination?

Interestingly, research says that we should forgive ourselves, become aware we are procrastinating or doing something else than what we need to do and immediately go for it with no further delay.

Few interesting remedies –

  1. Have a ‘to do’ list on the fridge or cupboard.
  2. Write “I believe in taking actions now” on a A4 sheet or sticky notes and paste it around in your home or office
  3. Make the enemy an ally, have apps on your mobile phone that keep reminding you to finish the task.
  4. Have an accountability partner, like a family member or friend or colleague who shall sit on your neck to make you complete the action.
